Forsyth of Denny

During the pandemic, funding and grants have been made available to businesses of all sizes as lockdown gave many the chance to identify ways to improve and invest in their digital capabilities.

This was the case for Forsyth of Denny, a crane hire transport and engineering business with over 75 employees at their headquarters in Stirling, with additional depots located in the Scottish Borders and Ayrshire.

With a slowdown in operations because of the pandemic, Managing Director Hugh McNally was able to review systems in place at the business, and identify areas for improvement. He approached DigitalBoost for funding to digitise their operations, create efficiencies and reduce the need for physical paperwork as operators move from job to job.

Hugh said, “Our system beforehand was quite archaic in terms of how we gave the information to our team from working with our customers, through to how we invoiced clients for a job. The pandemic gave us a chance to catch our breath and work out a way of improving things, and the funding through DigitalBoost gave us the opportunity and allowed us to start digitising a number of our processes, helping us build efficiencies and better ways of working.”

Forsyth of Denny applied for DigitalBoost Development Grant to assist with the purchase of the necessary hardware and configuration. The business was also able to task a recent Engineering graduate to configure the system for the business to use going forward.

Hugh said, “Before starting this journey, our process involved a lot of paperwork, and we weren’t in line with some of our UK competitors. Now we have real connectivity between the team in the office and the operators on the ground, making it easier for our team to get up-to-date information about a job through to invoicing the client.

“We have now reduced our environmental impact, reduced the chance of errors and improved efficiency, making it easier for staff and giving us traceability throughout our operations. It has been a positive experience for us, and I would encourage all businesses to look at how they are working and see if technology can help make processes simpler and more efficient.”
